A physician-led, integrative wellness team, PBWI’s highly trained experts cover a wide range of holistic healing modalities, including:
Accountability monitoring
Accountability monitoring provides a structured framework for maintaining commitment to individual wellness goals by having a personal connection with a PBWI team member on a daily basis. We use simple yet advanced technology to make this practice easy and engaging.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture stimulates pressure points on the body to increase well-being and heal dysfunction. Common benefits include reduced stress, reduced back and neck pain, relieved joint tension, reduced pain in hands and arms, headache relief, enhanced mental clarity and increased energy. It can also provide relief from insomnia, anxiety, depression and migraines.
Addiction medicine physician
Physicians who are board certified in Addiction Medicine have the expertise to evaluate, diagnose, treat, and develop transitional care plans for those struggling with addiction to substances. Doctors with this designation have completed coursework and training in addictive disease prevention and treatment.
Breathwork
Known for treating grief, loss, trauma, anxiety, alcoholism, addiction, and psychological issues, breathwork offers a meditative experience of conscious alteration of breathing patterns facilitated by a therapist.
Brain mapping
In an attempt to relate the brain’s structure to its function, this set of neuroscience techniques maps properties onto specific areas of the brain through spatial representation. Used in conjunction with treatment, brain maps can show which areas of the brain are over- or under-performing. This can be useful in diagnosing illness and prescribing treatment.
Cognitive assessment
Cognitive assessments evaluate mental functioning and can include aptitude, memory, language (and related communicative abilities), plus perceptual and motor skills. A major value of such assessments lies in providing a point of reference against which to track both positive and negative future changes due to illness or intervention.
Cognitive training
An alternative to or complement of pharmacological treatment, cognitive training amplifies specific cognitive functions (i.e. memory, attention, problem-solving) through guided practices with the intention to help the brain think faster and learn or perform more easily.
Cupping and Gua Sha
A traditional practice found in many cultures, cupping works to pull toxins from the body (through the skin) by sliding glass cups along tight muscle bands to release tension and adhesions within the muscles. Similarly, gua sha seeks to increase qi (energy) and blood flow by repetitively sliding a flat tool across hard-to-reach areas of the body.
Energy healing
A traditional healing system that restores the balance and flow of energy throughout the body, mind, and soul, energy healing works directly with the physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of well-being. While energy healing can be a terrific complement to the treatment of many medical conditions, it is especially useful in supporting recovery related to mental health disturbances.
Family coaching
Improving family dynamics happens more efficiently and effectively when individual members learn to function as a whole entity. Family coaching offers a process where one or more family members partners with a coach for guidance, direction, problem-solving, and goal-setting that benefits the entire family unit.
Functional training
This type of training develops proficiency in patients’ daily life activities, including such movement patterns as pushing, pulling, hinging, squatting, rotating, carrying, and gait patterns (i.e. walking and running). Increasing patients’ abilities in these types of activities improves strength, stability, agility, and flexibility.
Guided meditation
Meditation creates a habit that calms the distracted, busy mind and helps shift patients from a negative to positive perspective. Guided meditation with a Mindfulness Teacher helps reduce feelings of stress, hyperarousal, and anxiety by strengthening the mind’s ability to focus and create a deep state of relaxation.
Guided visual imagery
Designed to aid the patient in altering negative mental imagery and experiencing more positive thoughts, guided visual imagery functions as a mind-body intervention during which a trained practitioner helps a patient evoke and generate mental images that stimulate sensory fields (taste, touch, smell, sight, sound) to produce a positive, safe, and healing internal experience.
Herbal medicine
A program that utilizes plant products for therapeutic properties, herbal medicine finds its roots in many societies and cultures. Increasingly validated by scientific investigation, botanicals and other plant medicines can improve general health, prevent disease, and treat illness through the use of recommended supplements.
Hypnosis
A trance-like state in which the patient experiences a heightened sense of focus and concentration that allows change to occur at the deeper, subconscious level of the mind. Validated through evidence-based research, hypnosis has been proven to be extremely effective in treating both medical and psychological issues.
Laser acupuncture
The stimulation of traditional acupuncture points with low-intensity, non-thermal laser irradiation, this type of acupuncture works extremely well for patients who prefer non-needle modalities. With benefits that extend down to the cellular level, laser acupuncture offers a range of benefits including reduced inflammation, balanced central nervous system, and pain reduction.
Life coaching
This type of coaching offers a generalized approach to problem-solving and goal-setting in both personal and professional realms. Rather than offering advice, life coaching instead offers a guided process for connecting a patient’s inner wisdom, strengths and desires to the practical implementation of a plan designed to achieve specific desired outcomes.
Massage therapy
A well-known treatment for improving relaxation, relieving muscle tension, and easing aches and pains in the body, massage therapy reduces stress, improves circulation, releases tension, and often improves sleep patterns. Many patients find that the greatest benefit lies in their subsequent ability to finally relax in the present moment. Options for massage include:
- ART (Active Release Technique) – A process designed to break up scar tissue, ART combines massage with movement. By identifying and isolating affected muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves, this type of massage best treats soft tissue disorders that cause pain or other issues due to damage or injury.
- CRT (Cranial Release Technique) Designed to restore proper function of the nervous system and proper balance of body structure, CRT offers a gentle, hands-on approach to activating the body’s healing potential. Positive effects range from healing aches and pains to stimulating overall health and wellness.
- Acupressure An ancient Chinese Medicine therapy, acupressure massage relieves the body’s specific areas of pain. Engaging two types of pressure points on the body, a therapist can circulate energy through different meridians.
- Deep Tissue Mainly utilized to treat musculoskeletal issues (created by sports injuries and strains) deep tissue massage applies sustained pressure in slow, deep strokes to reach the inner layers of muscles and connective tissues. Benefits include breaking up scar tissue, relieving tension, and expediting healing by promoting increased blood flow and reduced inflammation.
- Lymphatic Drainage This gentle form of massage encourages the movement of lymph fluids through the body. This may result in improved removal of excess fluid and toxins while relieving symptoms of such conditions as fibromyalgia and lymphedema.
- Neuromuscular A specialized form of manual massage, neuromuscular massage releases strain in a muscle by employing digital pressure and friction. A very medical form of massage, this therapy corrects pain and movement dysfunction by treating trigger points, connective tissue patterns, and muscle adhesions that cause such conditions as upper and lower back pain, carpal tunnel-like symptoms, sciatica-like symptoms, calf cramps, plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, knee pain, jaw pain, temporomandibular joint pain (TMJ disorders), hip pain, and headaches.
- Reflexology Used to treat illness and reduce tension, reflexology stimulates pressure points on the hands, feet and head. Benefits can include strengthening the immune system, balancing the body and increasing energy.
- Sports/Injury Particularly good for overused and overstressed body areas affected by repetitive or aggressive movements, sports/injury massage promotes flexibility, improves endurance, and reduces fatigue. Receiving massage as part of a fitness regimen can decrease muscle soreness and other exercise-related effects.
- Swedish The primary goal of Swedish massage is to relax the entire body. Long, gliding strokes rubbing the muscles in the direction of the blood returning to the heart can improve circulation, increase flexibility, increase oxygen levels, and decrease muscle toxins.
Meditation
This process of focused attention trains the brain to promote awareness, mental clarity, and calm by enabling the mind to move from higher to lower frequency brain waves. Major benefits include more space between thoughts, plus more skillful and proactive control over choices and actions.
Mindfulness-based stress reduction
Mindfulness training specifically teaches participants how to use a combination of mindfulness meditation, yoga, body awareness, and patterns of thought, behavior, and action to reduce experiences of suffering through non-judgmental acceptance and investigation of present moment feelings, emotions and sensations. Positive outcomes can include reduction in stress, anxiety, depression and pain.
Neurofeedback
Based on electrical brain activity, neurofeedback addresses brain dysregulation by training the brain to function more efficiently. Benefits include increased self-regulation that can decrease behavior disorders, anxiety, depression, various sleep disorders, headaches and migraines, attention deficits, and emotional disturbances.
Neuropsychological assessment
This process assesses a patient’s level of cognitive function and helps diagnose neurological disorders, including dementia, traumatic brain injury, mild cognitive impairment, and attention deficit disorder. Additionally, these assessments can create a profile of individual strengths and weaknesses that inform guidelines for therapeutic intervention and improve daily functioning.
Nutrition coaching
Patients learn how nutrition impacts daily life, plus how changes in diet can have a positive impact on physiology and psychology. This type of coaching offers a healthy eating framework that fuels the body and mind while improving overall well-being.
Pain Coaching
Pain management coaching explores the science of pain, plus how it affects the brain. This educational, evidence-based approach to pain management introduces patients to strategies (including guided meditation, mindfulness, and breathwork) designed to increase positive self-care techniques.
Pharmacogenetic testing
It is well-known that genes affect the efficacy and safety of medication. This type of testing examines genes to identify which medicines (and at what dosage) will best fit a patient’s genetic structure.
Pilates/Rollology ™ Fitness
An innovative practice that aids in improving posture, strengthening core muscles, and promoting flexibility, Rollology has a positive impact on balance and athletic performance while reducing workout-related soreness, and muscle pain.
Psychoeducational services
Psychoeducation provides knowledge about mental health conditions, including factors that mitigate the onset, symptoms, treatment, and maintenance of results. Studies have shown that learning about and understanding mental health issues significantly aids in their positive management and resolution.
Psychotherapy
Addressing the mental and emotional (rather than the physical) symptoms of “dis-ease”, psychotherapy seeks to guide patients through an analytical and rational approach to reduce and manage symptoms. By helping patients talk about their issues, this approach helps to minimize or control symptoms so that patients experience increased well-being and functionality.
QiGong
An ancient Asian form of yoga, the poses of QiGong seek to harness willpower and focus while training practitioners to channel energy through their palms. Including a combination of movement, visualization, and breathwork, the guiding principle of this practice coordinates the eye with body movements, focus of the mind, and specialized breathing.
Recovery coaching
This future-focused type of coaching helps patients increase motivation for maintaining sobriety, clearly identify and create a plan to reach sober goals, and proactively remove barriers in the recovery process. This can cover a range of experiences from normalizing feelings to creating a strengths-based approach to change.
Reiki
A form of energy healing that originated in Japan, Reiki involves the transfer of universal energy from the palms of the practitioner to the patient’s body. This practice helps increase the flow of stagnant energy (due to physical or emotional energy) which can improve relaxation, reduce pain, speed healing.
Sober companions
A sober companion goes home with a patient to aid in the transition back into life while maintaining sobriety. Such companions can provide both emotional and psychological support to help patients have skills, focus, resources, and strength to manage triggers and urges during the most intense period of adjustment outside of a formal treatment program.
Sound therapy with frequency-infused music
This type of music therapy capitalizes on the body’s own vibration and uses low tones and frequencies to aid the body in attaining a state of healthy resonance. Improved outcomes can range from general well-being and emotional support to more specific issues such as posttraumatic stress disorder and hormonal imbalances.
Smoking cessation coaching
The deliberate process of professional help in planning, strategizing and implementing actions designed to help a patient quit tobacco. Including education and support, this type of coaching can address any habit/addiction to nicotine-based products, including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, E-cigarettes, vape pens, hookahs, chewing tobacco, snuff and snus.
Stress Management
The creation of a self-care practice that effectively interrupts the effects of negative disturbance on the mind and body. Applied in individualized methods based on patients’ interests, such a practice can include physical movement, mind-based processes, laughter, play, and mentally absorbing hobbies that produce a sense of emotional balance and well-being.
Tai Chi
One of the most effective practices for maintaining the health of the mind and body, Tai Chi uses controlled movements and breathing to generate internal energy. Ultimately, the essential purpose of this ancient Chinese practice is to cultivate the smooth and powerful flow of energy throughout the body.
Transformational Coaching
This type of coaching relies on a process designed to effect self-actualization that leads clients to change the way they see themselves. Achieving this outcome begins with creating a focus on Being and then dives below the surface to explore and discover a patient’s essence plus illuminate an inner operating system.
Trauma Recovery Coaching
Trauma-informed coaching focuses on managing many elements of healing, including trauma education, resetting the mind-body connection, taking control of the trauma story, managing posttraumatic stress symptoms, and developing strong coping skills. Benefits of working with a trauma recovery coach include a stable and proactive partnership, identification of a patient’s future-focused outcomes, creation of a results-oriented strategy, plus the development of strengths, resources, and habits that support the healing process.
